Our History

Where Nde Egbu came from

Oral tradition traces Egbu's roots back over a thousand years, with early settlement in the region dating to around the 9th century. Egbu belongs to the wider Alaenyi family of towns — alongside Ihitta Ogada, Awaka, Owerri and Naze — five communities descended from a common ancestor, Enyi, whose sons each founded one of these towns while remaining bound by shared culture and tradition.

Egbu itself takes its name from Enyi's third son, remembered as an industrious and resourceful leader who raised three sons of his own. Early community life centered on the ancient “Apu” tree at Apu Otu Obo, a natural gathering place for rest, trade and fellowship, in homes built from timber and palm fronds in the style of the era.

In time, internal conflict led branches of the family to resettle in Egbu Ozuzu, Egbu Oguta and Egbu Nzam, leaving five villages in the ancestral home. Though scattered, the wider Egbu family has never lost its connection — the Mgbugbuzo festival and the Afor market day still draw the diaspora back to its roots today, the same spirit of unity that founded Egbu Town Union USA.

How the union began in America

In 2002, our elderstatesman Prof. Ndaa Ndukwe Frank Ibe asked three trusted sons of Egbu to bring every Umu-Egbu living in the United States together as one organized union.

That pioneer committee — Dr. Kelechi Lawrence as Chairman, Ichie Vincent Nnadi as Secretary and Mr. Umunna Ekeocha as Treasurer — steered the work that grew into today's Egbu Town Union of USA Inc.

More than two decades on, that founding spirit still guides how we organize, give and serve.
